This poster features a Small Milkweed Bug ( Lygaeus kalmii) on pink poppy petals with soft green grass in the background. This bug is black with orange bands on the forewings that form an “X.” The head is also black with a red spot on the top which often extends to the face. It is theorized that this bright colored pattern is to warn predators that the insect tastes bad. They feed on plants which contain toxins that the insects take into their bodies when feeding. The insects are not harmed by the toxins, but predators don’t like the taste of the insects, so after tasting a black and orange insect, they learn to leave them alone!

This humorous 2013 calendar poster features a grumpy looking American Toad (Bufo americanus). This small amphibian is brown with black, gold olive green and orange coloration. Although an endangered species on Florida;s Gulf Coast, these birds can be seen enjoying the tropical environs. From the designer: This binder features a photograph of a European common Toad (Bufo bufo) I found this toad in my garden at night after hearing loud rustling noises in a flowerbed and watching as this toad crept out. I used the flash to capture this stunningly beautiful amphibian at night. The photo appears on the front and back of the binder and there is customizable white text on the spine of the binder, which is green. This binder would make a wonderful personalized gift that can be used as a document file or photo album.

By replacing the nuclei of egg cells from an elephant with those taken from the mammoth's marrow cells, embryos with mammoth DNA can be produced, Kyodo said, citing the researchers. Embryos will then be implanted into elephant wombs for delivery as the two species are closely related. Securing nuclei with an undamaged gene is essential for the nucleus transplantation technique. For scientists involved in the research since the late 1990s, finding nuclei with undamaged mammoth genes has been a challenge. The woolly mammoth is known from bones and frozen carcasses from northern North America and northern Eurasia with the best preserved carcasses in Siberia. They are perhaps the most well known species of mammoth. It disappeared from most of its range at the end of the Pleistocene, with an isolated population living on Wrangel Island until roughly 1700 BCE. Woolly mammoths are common in the fossil record.
