Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series The tip of the "wing" of the Small Magellanic Cloud galaxy is dazzling in this new view from NASA's Great Observatories. The Small Magellanic Cloud, or SMC, is a small galaxy about 200,000 light-years way that orbits our own Milky Way spiral galaxy. Many navigators, including Ferdinand Magellan who lends his name to the SMC, used it to help find their way across the oceans.

Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 1672 Astronomy Picture Fleece Blanket
tagged with: hubble galaxy photography, spiral galaxy picture, star galaxies, deep space astronomy, barred spiral galaxy, starry space picture, galactic arms, star forming galaxy, starry spiral arms, hrbstslr bsgsst, outer space picture, spiral galaxies, dust lanes
Galaxies, Stars and Nebulae series: This NASA Hubble Space Telescope view of the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC 1672 unveils details in the galaxy's star-forming clouds and dark bands of interstellar dust.
One of the most striking features is the dust lanes that extend away from the nucleus and follow the inner edges of the galaxy's spiral arms. Clusters of hot young blue stars form along the spiral arms and ionize surrounding clouds of hydrogen gas that glow red. Delicate curtains of dust partially obscure and redden the light of the stars behind them by scattering blue light.

Relax on Kepler 16b vacation advert space tourism Poster
tagged with: retro style adverts, retro holiday adverts, art nouveau, kepler 16b, nasa exoplanet exploration program, two suns, nasa jpl picutres, vacation destinations, holiday destinations, hrbstslr k16bha wallart
A wonderful, retro-style advert in an art-nouveau tradition. Kepler-16b orbits a pair of stars. Depicted here as a terrestrial planet, Kepler-16b might also be a gas giant like Saturn. Prospects for life on this unusual world aren't good, as it has a temperature similar to that of dry ice. But the discovery indicates that double-sunsets are anything but science fiction.
